What to pack for your first Himalayan trek

By Team Carabiner Diaries · Updated

Quick answer: The layering system, the shoes, and the five small things people always forget.

Packing for a trek is about layers, not bulk. Here is the list we send every first-time trekker.

Layers

  • A quick-dry T-shirt as the base layer (no cotton)
  • A fleece as the middle layer
  • A down or padded jacket for camp
  • A waterproof shell for rain and wind

Feet

Trekking shoes with ankle support and a good grip. Break them in for at least two weeks before the trek. Carry two pairs of woollen socks.

The five things people forget

  1. Lip balm
  2. A head torch
  3. A pack cover
  4. Plastic bags to keep clothes dry
  5. A small towel
